SKYWARN and Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors training

SKYWARN and Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors training, presented by the National Weather Service (NWS)

Date & Time: April 20, 2024  10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

This course will help all of us to get better at understanding the weather we are experiencing and partner with the NWS to keep them updated with our observations.  This training will be held at the NWS Baltimore/Washington Forecasting Station in Sterling, VA and will include a tour of their facility.

SKYWARN
SKYWARN is a volunteer storm spotter program that was created in the 1970s. There are approximately 400,000 severe weather spotters, trained by NWS meteorologists on how to spot and report local weather phenomena, including severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, hail, flooding, and snow/ice accumulation. An average year in the United States experiences 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods, and 1,000 tornadoes. The NWS needs local experts to report observed weather to the NWS during severe weather events.

Marine Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors
Building a weather ready nation is a team effort. NOAA is recruiting Marine Weather-Ready Nation (WRN) Ambassadors, https://www.weather.gov/wrn/wrna-marine. Ambassadors commit to: promote Weather-Ready Nation messages, themes, and education about the NWS to their stakeholders; engage with NOAA personnel on potential collaboration opportunities; share success stories of preparedness and resiliency; and serve as an example, by educating employees on workplace preparedness.
