Continuing education

Providing continuing education courses for the professional development of captains is a key element in CAPCA's member benefit program. A captain’s license comes with the responsibility of staying current with laws, regulations, business practices and, most importantly, safety at sea. The continuing education program helps you improve your professional knowledge through courses and seminars. We keep costs low by using competitive bidding and guaranteed class size. Many classes are also open to the general public. Non-members are charged a slightly higher fee.

Each year, we offer an array of maritime-oriented classes, including U.S. Coast Guard-approved classes for renewing your captain's license and for refreshing your required first-aid/CPR certification. Depending on member demand, we also offer classes in a variety of other areas, from marine electricity and radar operation to medical emergencies at sea and basic offshore safety and survival. Many of these classes are open to the public.

You’ll receive course and seminar announcements through e-mail, on this website, through CAPCA tweets, and in our newsletter, The Log. Courses are usually held during the winter months.

If there is a need or a request for any other courses or seminars, CAPCA will try its best to schedule them. Please make suggestions by contacting education@capca.net.

Related to the Continuing Education Program are the professional courses available through ABYC. Some of these courses are highlighted in the ABYC report in the monthly issue of The Log, and you can find more courses on the ABYC website, to which CAPCA members have access. To get the access code for the ABYC member pages, log in to the member side of the CAPCA website and click on menu tab MEMBER KIT / Benefits. The code is the fourth bullet point.

MEET ONE OF OUR CAPTAINS

CHAMBLISS

CAPTAIN PETE CHAMBLISS is typical of many of our members. He spent 37 years as a state government employee before switching careers and becoming a full-time captain. He earned his Coast Guard captain's license (a 50-ton master for inland waters) and now operates water-taxis for Watermark. He also serves voluntarily as director of CAPCA's continuing education program.

"I've held my Coast Guard captain's license for 25 years, but I never really used it until eight years ago," Pete says. "I joined CAPCA for the educational programs that it runs and for the opportunity to network with—and learn from—other captains." See Pete on the water in Annapolis or come meet him and other captains at one of our monthly meetings. CAPCA meetings are public and you're welcome to attend. See CALENDAR / SPEAKERS on this website.
