SMARTPHONES and TABLETS: The CAPCA website has been optimized for viewing on a smartphone or small-screen mobile device. Here are a few things you should know about the mobile-device format:

When you call up the website, under the CAPCA logo and light blue stripe, is a blue NAVIGATION bar. The small white square to the right of the word "Navigation" is the menu: tap it and you get the full menu, displayed vertically. It works the same way on the public and the member sides.

• Tap any menu item to go to that page. The page displays right under the member LOGIN/LOGOUT button. Set your mobile browser to remember passwords to make future log-ins easy.

Depending on the size of your mobile screen, when you clink on an index link to go to the article, you may have to scroll up or down a little to get to the start of the article. It's not possible to have the links hit at the exact start of an article on both large screens and small screens.

FORMS: when you fill out a form and click on the “I am not a robot” verification near the end of the form, using some browsers you may be asked to complete a second verification task. This is a security feature to prevent the robotic filling out of forms by a computer bot (i.e. roBot).

The MEMBER LOG IN and MEMBER LOG OUT button in is in the blue area under the word “NAVIGATION.” There is also a LOG OUT button in the middle of most member pages. Both work. When you tap the blue MEMBER LOGOUT button, you get a second LOG OUT button in a turquoise blue box: tap that to complete the log out.

Below the pages of information on the public side may be one or more panels of information, which are the items of information from the right side and the boxes at the bottom of the screen that you see on a larger screen.

Below the pages of information on the member side only is a second log out button, and then one to three panels of information, which are the right column information items and the boxes at the bottom of the page that you see on a larger screen.

The RESOURCES section (left side column on larger screens) is at or near the bottom of all public and member pages. Scroll down.

• TWEETS: to read the CAPCA tweets, scroll to the bottom of any page and click on the small red Twitter circle under CAPCA’s address and phone number. Better yet, sign up to receive CAPCA tweets on your smart phone to stay informed.

GETTING AROUND: use the “back” arrow on your browser OR scroll up to the white menu square and make another selection from the menu.

About 15 minutes of practice on your particular smartphone is worth the time. There may be slight differences in display and operation depending on your smartphone model, the age of your phone, its operating system (Android, Apple iOS, Blackberry, Symbian, Windows OS, BADA, Palm OS, Web OS, Maemo, MeeGo or others) and the browser you use for mobile access to the website.

CAPCA Speakers Bureau

microphone 1674903 1280

Need a speaker for your yacht club or professional organization? Ask one of our Coast Guard-licensed captains.

Our members have a wealth of experience—on the water and in classrooms—that gives them the knowledge and background to provide guest-speaker presentations on a host of maritime-related topics, from seamanship and navigation to radio operation and basic first aid  for boaters (see partial list below). Or, you can give us a topic that interests you, and we’ll take it from there.

CAPCA provides this as a public service to the maritime community. There's no speaking fee or charge.

Click HERE and fill out the "Request a CAPCA Speaker" form. When you're done, click SUBMIT at the bottom of the form, and our speaker’s bureau coordinator will get back to you soon. (CAPCA members: to volunteer for the speakers bureau, log in and go to menu tab MEMBERS KIT / SPEAKERS BUREAU.)

Partial list of topics we can cover:

basic navigation | how to use your chartplotter | celestial navigation | a fresh look at boating safety | training your crew | how to be an effective first mate | learning the ropes: knots and lines | using your VHF-FM marine radio | how to use radar | rules of the road and you | better boathandling | first aid fundamentals for boaters

how to buy a boat | tips about chartering a boat | using your boat to learn more about science and the environment | women and boating | transiting the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)

sailing single-handed | sailing at night | extended cruising | your first offshore passage | sailing in foreign waters | sailing the Atlantic and the Mediterranean | cruising Atlantic Canada | cruising NW Europe | shipping a yacht overseas | how to get bluewater experience

salty language - modern-day words and phrases that derive from the age of sail

If you don't see your interests here, please ask us . . .  e-mail  speakers@capca.net

Thanks so much for thinking of CAPCA.

Note: Although our captains' licenses range from small passenger vessels to oceangoing ships, the bulk of our members operate boats of 100 tons or less—such as tourboats, water-taxis, towboats, and charterboats. Some also work as delivery captains for transporting recreational boats between ports.

THE NEW WEBSITE:

YOUR SECURITY, YOUR PROFILE

The new website brings some important changes for CAPCA members and the public. First, you can now rest assured that both the website and your online payments are secure. This is one of the reasons that CAPCA has gone digital rather than continuing to rely on paper records and paper bank checks. Here’s what we mean: your bank check has your bank account number and routing number printed on it. Both are valuable information for thieves. By contrast, paying online with a credit card via PayPal protects you with an encrypted transaction: no paper records exist.

And now you can easily pay on PayPal with a credit card without having a PayPal account

How can you tell that the CAPCA website is secure? Look on your browser at the left end of the window where the CAPCA website address is: you’ll see a little green lock. This means that SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protection has been applied to the CAPCA website.

SSL is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data that’s transferred through the web server and browsers remains private and integral. SSL is an industry standard and it’s used by millions of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers.

Many websites that enable you to transact business online have the green lock icon: look at your bank or credit card company’s website, PayPal.com, amazon.com, or even weather.com. Hover your pointer over the green lock and you’ll see the name of the SSL company; click on our lock and you see “www.capca.net Secure Connection.”

FOR MEMBERS: UPDATING YOUR PROFILE

Because our new website has SSL protection, your electronic records on the website also are protected. So when you update your member profile, the information that flows between your browser and CAPCA’s own database is encrypted as well.

We ask that you take care of making sure that your User Profile is up-to-date. Please do it yourself—don’t e-mail us to update your records for you the way the old system used to work, and definitely don’t send a paper letter with personal information. Trust us—this way it’ll be a lot more secure and accurate.

Here’s how to do it: Log on to the member side of www.capca.net and click on MEMBERS KIT. This page tells you how to update your User Profile on the MY ACCOUNT menu tab (far right on top menu bar).

Keeping your profile up to date is important. CAPCA relies on accurate information in your profile to send membership renewal reminders and to supply information for our online member directory. Please update when anything changes. Thank you!

MEET ONE OF OUR CAPTAINS

CAPCAmeetAliciaTyrell

CAPTAIN ALICIA TYRELL is typical of many of our members. She spent 15 years as a biotech products developer before deciding to switch careers and become a full-time captain. She earned her Coast Guard captain's license (a 100-ton master's for inland and near-coastal waters) in 2014 and now operates water-taxis year-'round for the Baltimore Water Taxi Company. In the summer, she also works as a part-time captain for other maritime companies.

"Before I got my license, I was working so I could afford to spend more time on the water," she says. "Now I get paid to do that." See Alicia on the Patapsco River or come meet her and other captains at one of our monthly meetings. CAPCA meetings are public and you're welcome to attend.

Got a Coast Guard captain's license? Join CAPCA today and take advantage of the many benefits that our members receive.
