Tour of USCG Sector Baltimore Command Center - 6:00pm to 8:00pm |
| Description: |
The Commanding Officer of USCG Baltimore has invited the members of CAPCA to take a tour of the Sector’s Command Center (SCC) located at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore. This facility is generally off limits to the general public, as it is the hub for the Coast Guard’s interagency emergency coordination and operations in the northern Chesapeake & Washington DC. Should operations permit, the Sector Commander, Capt O’Malley and/or his Deputy CDR Roche will join us at the Dry Dock Club to chat with our members. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided along with coffee, tea & soda. This event cost $15 per person is only open to CAPCA members in good standing. Space is LIMITED and expected to fill up fast. Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP) - 9:00am to 4:00pm |
| Description: |
A Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP) is required to operate radiotelephone stations, (MF & VHF Marine Radios), aboard compulsory equipped vessels under the Communications Act, such as inspected small passenger vessels being navigated on any tidewater within the jurisdiction of the United States. The MROP can also meet the requirements for compulsory equipped vessels under the Bridge-to-Bridge Radiotelephone Act, such as tow vessels over 26ft, power-driven vessels 20 meters or over, etc. The MROP is also the first step for mariners looking to earn their Global Maritime
Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) endorsement. An MROP is issued for the holder's lifetime. Upon successful completion of this course, you be issued a temporary FCC MROP license. Your permanent license will arrive in approximately 2 weeks. There is no prerequisite for taking this course. The cost is $150 for CAPCA members in good standing, and $185 for non-members. | Description: |
John Hersey, ARGUS Project leader, will discuss this very interesting new technology. ARGUS stands for Autonomous Remote Global Underwater Surveillance. This system uses volunteer vessels equipped with ARGUS hardware to provide near real time updates of nautical charts and online references for areas with shoaling. This course is a hands-on training seminar involving lectures, practical demonstrations, and the opportunity to address emergency procedures in a controlled environment. The latest safety equipment will be reviewed and
demonstrated if possible. Topics covered will include: making emergency repairs underway to get your vessel back to port safely, flooding control, loss of propulsion or steering, man overboard, groundings, fire, and dismasting. The course will address SAR procedures from the perspective of the victim and the rescuer. Documents you will receive and learn to use include: Pre-Trip Checklist, Crew Information Form, Risk Assessment and Management, Abandon Ship Bag Checklist, Emergency Activation Plan for the Vessel, and Risk Assessment & Management. This course is designed to teach the recognition and management of medical emergencies off shore where timely communications and rescue are limited or not possible. The captain is responsible for the safety and comfort of his or her crew. Off soundings, he/she is also the chief medical officer. Come and learn how a captain or crew with limited medical expertise can handle medical emergencies reasonably and logically, minimizing loss of life and limb. Be prepared to handle illness or injury when offshore! This specialized course will provide you with the confidence to handle medical emergencies reasonably and logically. Planning & Executing Long Range Coastal Cruises & Deliveries - 9:00am to 4:00pm |
| Description: |
This course will look at the resources available to plan for trips South to Florida (both coasts) and North to the Great Lakes. We will discuss how to use these tools as they apply to different situations such as boat size, draft, speed, fuel consumption, etc. We will review in detail the different route options available both to the North and South, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each. After the Group seminar, we will divide into smaller groups based on your particular interest. These will be led by experienced delivery captains. They will reflect on some of their experiences and how you can learn from them. One group will focus on the off-shore routes with their special requirements/considerations. Another group will discuss the "commercial" delivery requirements with and without the owner on board. A third group will look at the recreational opportunities of these trips. There will be time for open questions and opportunities for socializing and networking. The cost is $35 for CAPCA members in good standing, and $50 for non-members. This one day course is designed to show practical uses of Marine Radar for Piloting, Chart Navigation and Collision Avoidance. Both professional Captains and recreational boaters will gain knowledge in practical Radar techniques using simple procedures. Students will receive an instructor lead classroom presentation, and work in 2 or 3 person teams during the Radar simulator practical exercises. Each team will use Radar Simulator Training Software running on classroom supplied laptop computers. The instruction you will receive in this course will teach you how to get the most out of your Marine Radar using simple techniques and procedures. The cost is $160 for CAPCA members in good standing, and $190 for non-members. McKnight, leader of the Maryland DNR's Invasive Species Matrix team, will talk about Department's scientific and technical response to non-native species which pose potential threats to Maryland's natural ecosystems and the Chesapeake Bay. Besides advising the Secretary of Natural Resources on policy and regulations pertaining to invasive species, such as mute swans, nutria, and zebra mussels, the Team also shares information, works to prevent introduction, and coordinates early detection and rapid response to the threat of invasive species. |
